PUBLIC LIABILITY

WHAT IS PUBLIC LIABILITY INSURANCE

It is designed for professionals who interact with customers or members of the public. It protects against claims of personal injury or property damage that a third party suffers (or claims to have suffered) as a result of an organisation business activities. In other words, it is an insurance policy that protects a business from costs for lawsuits brought by members of the public.

WHAT DOES IT COVER?

Public Liability Insurance covers the costs of defending an organisation from a lawsuit and payments of claims by a member of the public, including:

  • BODILY INJURY – the coverage protects against the risk of someone being injured in the premises of an organisation’s property. The coverage usually includes areas outside the property, like walkways and parking lots.

  • PROPERTY DAMAGE -The coverage includes protection of a business from damage to someone else's property while they are on your property or while you are doing work. For example, if a carpenter is working on a customer's home and breaks a window, that damage would be covered.

  • LEGAL EXPENSES - The cost of hiring and paying an attorney to represent your business in a lawsuit brought by a customer or someone else is covered by a PLI policy.

WHAT DOES IT NOT COVER?

Public Liability Insurance does not cover:

  • Accidents that happen to you as the business owner
  • Accidents or injuries to your employees
  • Costs to defend defamation charges (libel or slander) against you or your business.
  • Costs for professional liability lawsuits sometimes called errors and admissions or malpractice. Malpractice insurance is usually for health care professionals, while errors and admissions insurance are for general professionals.
